Surgical anatomy of cervical sympathetic trunk: a cadaveric study

Background: Cervical sympathetic trunk (CST) is at risk of injury during surgical procedures cervical spine and may result in Horner’s syndrome. The purpose present study was to clearly describe the anatomy CST with respect surrounding structures analyse anatomical variations.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 50 chains were studied by bilateral neck dissections 25 formalin fixed human cadavers from Department Anatomy, Government medical college Thrissur.Results: chain found inside carotid sheath 1 (2%) side neck. Superior ganglion (SCG) consistently seen all chains. Middle (MCG) 27 (54%) studied; vertebral (VG) 33 (66%) Inferior (ICG) 38 (76%) CSTs. case stellate (SG), it 12 (24%) most common type consisting SCG, VG ICG (17, 34%). Out studied, appeared similar on right left sides 14 cadavers.Conclusions: This concludes that variations occur regard occurrence measurements its ganglia. Our also emphasizes need for awareness CST’s prevent inadvertent it.
